Minister of Science and Education Prof. Radovan Fuchs, Ph.D. participated in the informal meeting of Ministers responsible for Space, which was held on November 20, 2020. EU ministers discussed Europe's role in the global space economy.
EU ministers agreed on the need to build up the role of SMEs and start-ups in the context of strengthening the space economy. Also, they recalled the need to strengthen the synergy approach between the EU and the European Space Agency (ESA). Ministers emphasized that the space sector can contribute to resolving the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and stressed the need to boost technology development, cyber security as well as encourage institutional agreement and coordinated efforts to support the space industry.
Minister Fuchs emphasized that, in order to strengthen its position in the global sphere, the EU has to continue supporting its industry. Special emphasizes and efforts have to be put also in contracts for small and medium sized enterprises from across the EU, said Minister Fuchs. The Minister also stressed the need to further align efforts at EU level as well as development of skills and investment in capacity.
Space Council, a joint format of the EU and the ESA Council, was held in the afternoon, where the Council Conclusions/ESA Resolution on Orientations on the European contribution in establishing key principles for the global space economy were supported.
