Prof. Radovan Fuchs, Ph.D., minister of science and education, participated in the meeting of the Council of European Union for Competitiveness (research and space), which took place on 10th of June 2022 in Luxembourg.
At the meeting, ministers approved the Conclusions on European missions, Conclusions on principles and values for international cooperation in research and innovation, Conclusions on research assessment and implementation of open science and held a political debate on the topic of supporting young researchers in times of crisis.
Minister has emphasized the need to maintain the balance between bottom-up and top-down research as well as the need to further encourage projects of strategic importance to Europe.
In the afternoon part of the meeting of the Competitiveness Council composed of ministers responsible for space, the Conclusions on Copernicus by 2035 and the Conclusions on an EU approach to space traffic management were approved.
The ministers also held a political debate on the resilience and competitiveness of the EU Space Programme where Minister Fuchs emphasized the key role of coordinated action by Member States. It was concluded that the current geopolitical situation poses a number of challenges for the space sector and that the Union needs to coordinate its approach in order to independently cover the whole value chain and remain globally competitive in this area.
