Fifth European Education Summit took place on 1 December 2022 in Brussels
The Fifth European Education Summit: “Bright Young Minds” took place on 1 December 2022 as a hybrid event in Brussels.
The Summit brought together 21 minister of education, the members of the European Parliament, youth representatives and the members of the education and training community.The keynote speakers were Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission, Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen who delivered a speech via video message.
The goal of the Summit was to bring new perspectives, innovative solutions and creative approaches to help make the European Education Area a reality.
Minister of Science and Education Prof Radovan Fuchs, PhD participated in the panel „Empowered in the Digital Age: Effective Provision of 21st Century Digital Skills in Education and Training“, together with Vladimir Balaš, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Czech Republic; Jens Brandenburg, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany; Victor Negrescu, Member of the European Parliament, Vice Chair of the Committee on Culture and education (CULT), Petr Štěpánek, Youth representative from Czech Republic and Asude Altıntaş, Turkey, Co-founder of Twin Science.
At the Panel Minister Fuchs pointed out the necessity of a continuous digital transformation of schools through the modernisation of curricula, educational materials and adaptation of learning and teaching methods with digital technology. Minister highlighted the e-Schools project launched in 2015 and activities of digitalization of business and teaching processes at schools with aim to create digitally mature schools for the 21st century. He also emphasized the process of establishing a system of digital maturity of higher education institutions and an example of good practice: the voucher system for the education of employed and unemployed persons who need additional training in the field of digital skills development. The importance of well-being of educators and children and the potentially negative effects of uncontrolled use of digital technologies has been especially pointed-out. Minister mentioned the recent study conducted on Croatian students that shows that moderate use of technology significantly contributes to the social and emotional competencies of the child while overuse of smartphones leads to increased levels of depression and anxiety. Minister concluded that we approach the use of technology as a tool in the service of enriching the educational process and not as a concept that replaces teaching in a real environment.
Ljubica Petrović Baronica, Assistant Director in the Agency for Mobility and EU programmes participated at the panel dedicated to the building of the European Educations Area.
