State Secretary Ivica Šušak participated in the meeting of the Council of European Union for Competitiveness (COMPET)

State Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Education, Mr. Ivica Šušak, participated at the meeting of the Council of European Union for competitiveness (research and space) that was held on May 28th 2021 in Brussels. Apart from the general approach for the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking, three sets of Council Conclusions.

Dependency on European capability to develop key HPC technologies, provide access to world-class supercomputing and data infrastructures, and maintain its present excellence in HPC applications Europe’s leading role in the data economy, its scientific excellence, and its industrial competitiveness will only increase.

EuroHPC was established in October 2018 and the new proposal by the European Commission enables the adaption of the programmes multiannual financial framework (MFF) for the period from 2021 to 2027 and using the budget of Horizon Europe, Digital Europe and Connecting Europe Facility.

During the meeting, Conclusions on "Deepening the European Research Area: Providing researchers with attractive and sustainable careers and working conditions and making brain circulation a reality“ were approved and a policy debate was held on topic of renewing the European Research Area and preparing the roll out of an ambitious ERA fit for the next decade.

In the afternoon, during the part of the meeting dedicated to the area of space, approval of Conclusions on “New Space for People“ and "Space for People in European coastal areas" took place. Policy debate on topic of better positioning of the European Union in space traffic management was held. State Secretary Šušak emphasized that the complexity of STM requires the inclusion of a wide range of stakeholders, including those which are not directly linked to space or security related aspects, for example stakeholders from the area of environment protection.

The meeting ended with the presentation by the Slovenian delegation of their plans for the forthcoming Slovenian presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half this year.
